You’ve Just Been Involved in an Accident, What’s Next?

  1. Call the police, request medical help if needed, and ask that a crash report be written.  A crash report is often beneficial for your claim; therefore, it is important to be as thorough as possible. Keep the conversation with the other party to a minimum and let the officer gather information from both sides.

  2. Take photos of the scene, any property damage, and the license plate of the other vehicle involved. While your memory may fade, photos do not. If there are witnesses at the crash site be sure to obtain their contact information.

  3. Seek medical treatment immediately. Setting and attending an appointment within 1 to 3 days of the accident is ideal. You may not immediately feel any pain or discomfort, however, symptoms of accident-related injuries may take some time to develop. Additionally, treatment within an immediate timeframe is important to preserve potential insurance benefits.

  4. Do not post on social media. While it may seem reasonable to post about your life online, insurance companies have the means to access your online content could use it against you during litigation.

  5. Talk to an attorney, but remember, not all attorneys are the same. It is imperative that you seek a knowledgeable attorney to handle your claim. Do your research by looking at their website, social media and speak to others.
